Building a Systematic Trading Plan

How to combine everything you've learned into a documented, repeatable process.

What separates consistent traders from the 91%

The SEBI data from Lesson 7 is stark — 91% of F&O traders lose. The common thread among those who do survive is not a secret indicator or insider tip. It's a written, documented trading plan they follow consistently.

A trading plan answers four questions before you enter any trade
  1. What is my entry rule? (Which signal tells me to buy or sell?)
  2. Where is my stop-loss? (How much am I willing to lose on this trade?)
  3. What is my exit rule? (What tells me the trade is done — win or lose?)
  4. How much capital am I risking? (Position sizing — Lesson 9)

Three common systematic strategy types

Most successful retail systematic strategies fall into one of three categories:

Strategy typeEdgeCadenceInstruments
Factor-based equityQuality + Momentum selection from a large universeMonthly rebalanceStocks
Options incomeVolatility risk premium — collect theta as a sellerWeekly cycleIndex options
Trend-followRide sustained directional moves using EMA + momentumDaily checkCommodities, ETFs

The three systematic edges — how they complement each other

EQUITY FACTOR Quality + Momentum screens large universe Monthly picks Long-term compounding Equal-weight positions OPTIONS INCOME Short premium strategy Theta decay as edge Weekly cycle Defined entry rules VIX overlay for safety TREND-FOLLOW EMA + ADX + Momentum Ride sustained moves Daily signal check ATR trailing stop Works in commodities, ETFs

Building your own plan — a checklist

Before placing any real trade, document these
  • Universe — which stocks or instruments will you trade?
  • Entry rule — written in IF-THEN form ("If X happens, I enter")
  • Stop-loss rule — a fixed % or ATR-based level, set before entry
  • Exit rule — when does the trade close? (target, trailing stop, time stop)
  • Position sizing — max 1–2% of capital at risk per trade (Lesson 9)
  • Cadence — when do you check signals? (monthly? weekly? daily?)
  • Backtest window — has this rule been tested across at least one full market cycle?

What this course covered

You now have the full foundation: markets and price discovery (Lesson 1), fundamental and technical analysis (Lesson 2), chart reading (Lesson 3), order types (Lesson 4), support/resistance and trends (Lesson 5), options mechanics (Lesson 6), why most traders lose (Lesson 7), the power of systematic rules (Lesson 8), position sizing (Lesson 9), tax implications (Lesson 10), and now how to assemble it all into a written trading plan.

The advanced classes go deeper into specific strategy mechanics — factor models, options Greeks, backtesting methodology, and how to evaluate a strategy's track record before committing real capital.

  Key Takeaways
  • A written trading plan answers: what to trade, when to enter, where to stop, how much to risk.
  • Three proven systematic edges: factor-based equity, options income, and trend-follow.
  • Each strategy type suits a different capital size, time horizon and risk tolerance.
  • Backtest your rules across multiple market regimes before trading real capital.
  • Consistency with a documented system beats chasing the 'best' indicator.
